**Area Round Playing Dates Exception

With state testing and the UIL State Track and Field State Meet both occurring during the week of May 3rd – 7th, softball teams that elect to play a three-game series may extend the series until Monday to complete the series provided at least one game is completed by the end of the day on Saturday.   This applies to the area round for softball. Teams electing to use the exception should keep in mind:

  • The next round opponent may force a coin toss to begin the next round on Wednesday.
  • If only one game is played by Saturday, and Monday gets rained out, the series will revert to a one-game format and the winner of that one game will advance.
  • If two games are played (and split) and the third game cannot be played on Monday because of weather conditions, the third and deciding game shall be settled by a coin flip.
  • For 1A Softball, exception applies to the quarterfinal round

State Testing

In light of scheduling conflicts arising from changes to the primary administration testing calendar, the Commissioner of Education has determined, pursuant to 19 TAC §101.5001(d), that baseball, softball and track and field postseason contests, scheduled to take place on May 5-8, need not be canceled or rescheduled, as long as the following requirements are met:

    •    The competing schools have mutually agreed to the competition date. A school cannot be forced to schedule a competition on a test date by coin flip;

    •    The competition must be scheduled to begin after the end of the school day;

    •    Students shall not miss school time to travel to the competition, until after all tests for that day are scheduled to end for students participating in the competition.

Schools who have already made playoff arrangements may now consider rescheduling those by mutual agreement in light of this new information.

1A Playoffs

Extension for 1A Softball only

  • Following the Regional Semifinal Round, advancing 1A teams will have 2 weeks to certify their Regional Final Round.
  • During the extended certification period, teams are limited to playing 1 game during the school week.
  • Playoff games shall not be played before Wednesday of each week unless by mutual consent.
