FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AUSTIN, TX- The UIL is issuing the following statement regarding the procedures for UIL activities affected by Hurricane Rita:

Football Games
Varsity district games shall be played on a schedule and at times and locations as determined by the district executive committee (DEC). Varsity district games will be allowed an exception to the five day rule through Saturday, October 8th. Varsity district games may be played with four days in between, rather than five, through Saturday, October 8th.

For example, district varsity games could be scheduled for Friday September 30th, Tuesday October 4th and Saturday October 8th. After Saturday October 8th, all football games will be subject to the five-day rule.

District Executive Committees also have the option to cancel games and not reschedule them either by mutual consent of the two schools or by majority vote of the committee if the schools do not agree.

District Executive Committees utilizing the five-day rule exception to play within four days must notify the UIL office of their schedule for games and the use of the exception prior to implementing it. Schools should contact via phone either Dr. Charles Breithaupt (512-471-5883, 512-415-5930), or Dr. Mark Cousins (512-471-5883, 512-496-4764) with information on the rescheduling of varsity district games and the use of the exception to the five-day rule. Information could also be emailed to uilath@uts.cc.utexas.edu or markcousins@mail.utexas.edu.

All non-district varsity games that are (or were) not played as scheduled shall not be rescheduled unless both schools have an open date later in the season. Non-district games will be subject to the five-day rule, with no exceptions.

All sub-varsity games (including junior high games) that are (or were) not played as scheduled shall be cancelled and not rescheduled unless both schools have an open date later in the season.

The five-day rule will apply to all football games at the sub varsity (including junior high) levels. Teams playing Monday could not play again until Saturday. Teams playing Tuesday or Wednesday could not play again until the following Monday, etc.

District Tie-Breaking Procedures for Football
Schools unable to reschedule district varsity games due to circumstances involving Hurricane Rita shall not be required to forfeit games. District Executive Committees must convene and consider all district tie-breaking procedures, including selecting playoff representatives if replaying games is not an option.

Volleyball Games
Cancelled varsity district matches are to be rescheduled and played on a date determined by the district executive committee (DEC). This can be decided by mutual agreement between the two schools, or if agreement is not reached, the DEC will determine date, place and time for the rescheduled matches.

These postponed varsity district matches will be allowed as exceptions to both the school week and calendar week limits as long as they are played on the date assigned by mutual agreement or by the DEC (i.e. DEC determines next available date).

The DEC of districts in hurricane affected areas could decide to cancel a portion of the district schedule if schools in the district are adversely affected by the storm. Schools unable to reschedule district varsity matches due to circumstances involving Hurricane Rita shall not be required to forfeit games. District Executive Committees must convene and consider all district tie-breaking procedures, including selecting playoff representatives if replaying games is not an option.

All sub-varsity matches (including junior high), and varsity non-district matches that are not played as scheduled shall be cancelled and not rescheduled unless both schools have an open date later in the season. Sub-varsity matches (including junior high games) or varsity non-district matches do not qualify for exceptions to the school week or calendar week limits.
