Academic State Meet Deemed a Success

Students from across the state descended on the University of Texas at Austin campus May 6-8 to compete at the Centennial Academic State Meet. More than 2,500 students vied to be state champions and take home a centennial medal.

Council approves Rules Compliance Program

The Legislative Council has approved the UIL Rules Compliance Program (RCP), which will be required for coaches and athletic trainers of grades 7-12 for the 2010-11 school year. The program is designed to bring an additional level of professionalism to the interscholastic teacher/coach.

CX Debate State Meet celebrates the centennial anniversary

UIL is 100 years old. In March, the Cross-Examination Debate State Meet was the actual 100th state competition the University Interscholastic League has sponsored. UIL held its first contest with 10 debate teams, each representing one of the 10 districts in the state. Now, 32 districts in five conferences vie for the state crown.

Journalism adviser’s husband continues to give and teach even after his death

On the Monday after a district meet, I am a tad frightened of my phone. Those calls are not usually much fun.

So when Rhonda Moore, the academic coordinator and journalism coach for her school, called me, I figured the news wasn’t good.

And from her tone, I suspected we had a big problem.

Review New Official Fee Schedule Before Creating 2010-2011 Athletic Budget

      It’s that time of year when school districts are finalizing their budgets for the 2010-2011 school year. Many athletic departments budgets are being reduced, and that leaves some major decisions to make when trying to offer the same opportunities for all students with fewer funds. To prepare your official’s portion of the athletic budget, reference the UIL Web site home page under “Amendments Approved by the Commissioner of Education” for the changes to the officials’ fee schedule in Section 1204 of the Constitution and Contest Rules.

Coaches Honored at Girls’ Basketball Tournament

At the Girls' State Basketball Tournament as part of the UIL Centennial Celebration, the League recognized girls' basketball coaches with more than 900 wins. Collectively the group of honored coaches has won more than 6,700 games.

Chancellor Speaks at Scholarship Banquet

At the Texas Interscholastic League Foundation scholarship banquet at the Alumni Center on the University of Texas campus, UT System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa speaks to the scholarship recipients and audience. Cigarroa, a renowned pediatric surgeon, told the students that anything is possible with a solid education. Last year TILF awarded $1.2 million to former UIL academic state competitors.
