Excitement Grows as First Congress Competition Nears

By Jana Riggins, Speech and Debate Director | Wednesday, November 27, 2013 9:51 AM

This has been an exciting fall with new prose and poetry categories, SuperConferences and a brand new pilot contest, Congress! There’s not a single moment of downtime as we challenge students with new experiences and to greater heights in our annual events. All of these opportunities develop the critical skill of communicating.

The skills that students learn through speech and the personal attributes young people develop through instruction in communication theory prepare them like no other opportunity. Regardless of the journey they choose professionally, they need communication skills to be successful. Regardless of their cultural background, educational training or environment, being adept at communicating with others one-on-one, in small groups and in corporate teams is essential. All humans are engaged in relationships on different levels. To be successful in those relationships, knowing how to communicate is the ultimate skill for a progressive and happy life.

By Dr. Brad Kent, Director of Music | Wednesday, November 27, 2013 9:38 AM

Now that the competitive marching band season has concluded and we are transitioning into concert season, please allow me to share some thoughts with you. First of all, I would like to thank all of the students, directors, administrators, and parents who play such an important role in the success of our programs in Texas. Your passion and commitment to excellence is truly remarkable!

The 2013 marching band season culminated by showcasing some of Texas’ very best bands at the State Marching Band Contest on Nov. 4 and 5 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The level of performance and achievement by these bands embodied the exemplary standard for which arts education in Texas is known. Please join me in congratulating our 2013 State Champion Marching Bands:

Wrestling Director Gives Update for Season

By Peter Contreras, Assistant Athletic Director | Tuesday, October 22, 2013 2:09 PM

It has started. As the summers seem to get shorter each year, it is still with great enthusiasm that we start the 2013-2014 UIL wrestling season.
Some things have changed from last school year while others have not. Excluding the National Federation of State High School Associations playing rule changes, two big UIL adjustments has occurred.

Hopefully you have already made one of the adjustments – the loss of one tournament.

The other change was the state tournament site. Garland ISD’s Curtis Culwell Center will host the 2014 UIL State Wrestling Championships, Feb. 14-15.

Monday, Nov. 11 is the first date for meets or tournaments. Best of luck this season and I look forward to seeing you in February in Garland.

Changes Highlighted for OAP

By Luis Muñoz, Theatre Director | Tuesday, September 10, 2013 11:44 AM

Welcome back!  Jenny, Connie and I hope you were able to rest during your summer break.  We have been busy at the League office preparing for what will shape up to be an exciting year.  It’s a year full of changes and, we hope, improvements to the UIL One-Act Play Contest and Theatrical Design.  We also are excited with our roll-out of the Focus: Young Filmmaker’s Festival.

It is crucial that you download the 20th edition of the Handbook for One-Act Play and the eighth edition of the Guide for UIL OAP Contest Managers.  The two pdf documents can be found on the “Resources and Forms” page under the Theatre section of the UIL website:

http://www.uiltexas.org/theatre/resources-forms

There are many changes this year.  Here are some of the major ones.

4A and 5A Team Tennis Now Advance From District To Area Meet

By Darryl Beasley, Assistant Athletic Director | Monday, September 09, 2013 2:26 PM

As you start the new school year, I would like to share a 4A and 5A team tennis rule change, which will affect the 2013-14 regional tournament.  The new rule allows four teams from each district to advance to a NEW AREA tournament.  Districts will host this NEW AREA tournament, and the first and second team finishers will advance to the regional tournament.  The number of teams at the regional tournament will be eight teams instead of 16.

The 4A and 5A team tennis area meets are required.  Each district will make arrangements with the corresponding district to host an area meet.  The corresponding district matches will be: 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, etc.  However, there is an option.  With majority votes from both District Executive Committees, the area meet can be cancelled. In this scenario, each district would hold its district meet and advance the top finishers to the Regional Meet.

University Interscholastic League Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt was selected as a recipient of the Texas Girls Coaches Association Citation of Merit Award given to him at the association’s annual summer convention.

Breithaupt, a coach and educator for 17 years before joining the UIL, is only the second recipient of the TGCA’s highest honor. The award is given to individuals who have gone above and beyond in contributing to the success of the TGCA and is only awarded on odd years when the association’s convention is held in Austin.

“There is no more deserving person than Dr. Charles Breithaupt,” TGCA Executive Director Sam Tipton said. “It’s been a great, great partnership, and we just wanted to give back a little to him for what he has done for girls athletics and the Texas Girls Coaches Association.”

Tips for Planning Your Academic Vacation

By Dr. David Stevens, Academic Director | Friday, September 06, 2013 1:59 PM

Being an academic coordinator or coach for your campus is much like planning for a summer vacation with the family. It takes months of preparation for a few days or weeks of gratitude. But the payoff is usually worth the trouble.

The first step to going on vacation is selecting a date and location. For the UIL traveler, planning meetings for district spring meets began Aug. 15.  The planning meetings should include location, dates and assignments for CX debate, One-Act Play and the academic meet. If you have not received notification of this information, check with your campus administration or contact another coordinator in your UIL district.

Next, you will need to plan your itinerary for the trip. Districts are highly encouraged to follow the UIL Academic Conflict Pattern at the district contest. The conflict pattern is strictly enforced at the region and state meets.
