Wrestling Director Gives Update for Season

By Peter Contreras, Assistant Athletic Director | Tuesday, October 22, 2013 2:09 PM

It has started. As the summers seem to get shorter each year, it is still with great enthusiasm that we start the 2013-2014 UIL wrestling season.
Some things have changed from last school year while others have not. Excluding the National Federation of State High School Associations playing rule changes, two big UIL adjustments has occurred.

Hopefully you have already made one of the adjustments – the loss of one tournament.

The other change was the state tournament site. Garland ISD’s Curtis Culwell Center will host the 2014 UIL State Wrestling Championships, Feb. 14-15.

Monday, Nov. 11 is the first date for meets or tournaments. Best of luck this season and I look forward to seeing you in February in Garland.

Game/Tournament Limits
After approval from the State Commissioner of Education, all UIL sports lost a tournament. The total number of meets or tournaments a school can participate has been reduced to seven.

If you are planning to participate in more duals because of this rule change, make sure you are meeting the definition of a dual so you will not be forced to count it as a tournament.

Just In Case
Reminder, all coaches must complete the RCP course prior to the first day of practice for their first sport season. The course is optional for athletic trainers. A copy of the Rules Compliance Program certificate of completion must be filed with the school. http://www.uiltexas.org/athletics/rules-compliance- program.

Also, effective Aug.1, 2013 as passed by the UIL Legislative Council, the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Form must be signed annually by the student and the student’s parent or guardian. This form must be kept on file with the school and can be found on the UIL forms page at http://www.uiltexas.org/athletics/forms.

Coaches Manual
The Wrestling Coaches Manual has been updated for the 2013-2014 school year and is posted on our website at http://www.uiltexas.org/wrestling/manual.

2014 State Tournament Schedule
As announced last week, the 2014 UIL State Wrestling Championships will be held at Garland ISD’s Curtis Culwell Center. The two-day state championship will be Feb. 14-15. Thursday, Feb. 13 will be used for schools to pick up team information packets.

The new facility will allow for a two-day format as oppose to the three-day meet we had to have last year after to accomodate Conference 4A. A great deal of thanks and gratitude goes out to Austin ISD and its athletic department for being our host the past eight seasons.
