ATAVUS Online Procedures/Directions for Tackling Training

UIL has worked closely with THSCA to address the issue of head injuries in football. We are proud of the work Texas football coaches have done through the Atavus trainings to improve the way the game is coached in Texas.

For the 2023-2024 school year, with the overwhelming majority of coaches in Texas having completed both the first and second levels of training in “Best Practices in Tackling”, coaches who have completed both certifications, 1.0 & 2.0, are fully certified and will NOT require any further Atavus certifications.   Congratulations!

The only coaches that are required to certify prior to the 2023-2024 school are those coaches that will be new to the state of Texas or those coaches who have not completed both 1.0 and 2.0.  Coaches who completed version 1.0 in 2022 will need to complete version 2.0 before August 1st, 2024.

**All coaches are required to be registered in the UIL Portal.  Football Coaches must register for football in the UIL Portal and will be assigned an Atavus ID number.

There are multiple options for the “Best Practices in Tackling” (Atavus) Certification.  See below for options:

NOTE:  Two Certifications are now available:

  • 1.0 – Certification for all new coaches to the state of Texas.  (certification is good for 2 years)
  • 2.0 – Certification for coaches who have been certified in 1.0 and up for renewal.

Online Training (Options for 1.0 & 2.0 Certifications)

  • The cost of the certification is $35 and is paid directly to Atavus.
  • Online certification will re-open March 1st
  • Coaches will then have until July 31st to complete
  • If coaches have questions they can utilize the Atavus FAQ page here
  • A newly hired football coach will have 30 days to complete the tackling certification if hired during the school year, or will have to complete the tackling certification prior to August 1st if hired during the summer.
  • All UIL coaches must be registered in the UIL Portal.  In order for a coach to obtain an Atavus ID and log into the Atavus website the coach must be registered as a football coach in the UIL Portal.
