Coaches Honored at Girls’ Basketball Tournament

At the Girls' State Basketball Tournament as part of the UIL Centennial Celebration, the League recognized girls' basketball coaches with more than 900 wins. Collectively the group of honored coaches has won more than 6,700 games.

Chancellor Speaks at Scholarship Banquet

At the Texas Interscholastic League Foundation scholarship banquet at the Alumni Center on the University of Texas campus, UT System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa speaks to the scholarship recipients and audience. Cigarroa, a renowned pediatric surgeon, told the students that anything is possible with a solid education. Last year TILF awarded $1.2 million to former UIL academic state competitors.

Judging Survey and Other News Kicks Off OAP Season

The League office hopes that all of you have had a great school year and are ready to dive into this year’s OAP season. There have been many changes implemented this year. The online enrollment process has come and gone and was rather painless. Our current enrollment is 1,200. My thanks to the UIL’s Larry Woods for the design and execution of the system.
UIL Celebrates Black History Month

At the February staff meeting, the League celebrated Black History Month with two featured speakers — former Austin Independent School District administrator Dr. Charles Akins (right), who is currently a member of the TILF board and Waiver Review Board, and Dr. Gregory Vincent (left), vice president of the University's Division of Diversity and Community Engagement. Both men spoke of the achievements of many black men and women in America.
Tips to Help Academic Meets Run Smoothly

February is flying by, and we’ve already passed the deadline for setting up academic and One-Act Play district meets. Although we are still dealing with a few instances of incorrect information, meets are now posted on the UIL Web site. Contact information for regional hosts is also available online, and we will post links to the regional handbooks in the near future. Regional academic meets are April 22-24, with almost all academic events except OAP being held on April 24 and/or 25.

Being directly linked to Microsoft Office, the Computer Applications Contest must change as this application package changes. As students graduate into the workplace or into college, they are better prepared to succeed with the current skills of Office 2007, which has already been in the marketplace for more than three years, rather than tethered to Office 2003, which is seven years old. Seven years is a long time in an environment based on technology.
