Director Jana Riggins opens the CX Debate State Meet.

UIL is 100 years old. In March, the Cross-Examination Debate State Meet was the actual 100th state competition the University Interscholastic League has sponsored. UIL held its first contest with 10 debate teams, each representing one of the 10 districts in the state. Now, 32 districts in five conferences vie for the state crown.

Journalism adviser’s husband continues to give and teach even after his death

By Jeanne Acton | Friday, April 23, 2010 2:43 PM

On the Monday after a district meet, I am a tad frightened of my phone. Those calls are not usually much fun.

So when Rhonda Moore, the academic coordinator and journalism coach for her school, called me, I figured the news wasn’t good.

And from her tone, I suspected we had a big problem.

We did. But it had nothing to do with the district meet.

By Luis Munoz | Thursday, February 18, 2010 8:10 AM

The League office hopes that all of you have had a great school year and are ready to dive into this year’s OAP season. There have been many changes implemented this year. The online enrollment process has come and gone and was rather painless. Our current enrollment is 1,200. My thanks to the UIL’s Larry Woods for the design and execution of the system.

By Treva Dayton | Wednesday, February 10, 2010 11:46 AM

February is flying by, and we’ve already passed the deadline for setting up academic and One-Act Play district meets. Although we are still dealing with a few instances of incorrect information, meets are now posted on the UIL Web site. Contact information for regional hosts is also available online, and we will post links to the regional handbooks in the near future. Regional academic meets are April 22-24, with almost all academic events except OAP being held on April 24 and/or 25.

Looking Forward… in the Computer Applications Contest

By | Wednesday, February 10, 2010 10:44 AM

Being directly linked to Microsoft Office, the Computer Applications Contest must change as this application package changes. As students graduate into the workplace or into college, they are better prepared to succeed with the current skills of Office 2007, which has already been in the marketplace for more than three years, rather than tethered to Office 2003, which is seven years old. Seven years is a long time in an environment based on technology.

Looking for new ideas for the next 100 years

By Jeanne Acton | Tuesday, January 12, 2010 11:43 AM

As you might have noticed, UIL is observing its 100th anniversary this year, which reminds me: if you haven’t purchased a copy of Bobby Hawthorne’s history of the League, you absolutely must.

At any rate, in preparing for the various celebrations, I find myself reflecting on the UIL and, specifically, the journalism contests.

Student Activity Conferences and Centennial Celebrations Mark the Start of the Year

By Treva Dayton | Wednesday, November 04, 2009 12:50 PM

When I turned my desk calendar from October to November — and yes, despite my Blackberry’s electronic calendar I still rely on the old-fashioned one for notes, reminders, etc. — I had to pause and marvel at how quickly the first part of the school year had passed. But I realized that recent months hadn’t just flown by but had been packed with so many events and projects that the days just seemed to blur together.
