Spring 2020 LD Debate Topic

The wording of the UIL Spring 2020 topic to be debated January – May has been revised from its original release to

“On balance, gentrification is unjust.”

This change has been made in response to concerns shared by the debate community that the original wording of the resolution leaves too little flexibility to an affirmative debater who has deep-seated convictions about the process of gentrification. Consultation with officials on the national level and with Texas coaches has confirmed  that the negative debater would be provided sufficient flexibility with the above wording change. Debaters and coaches who have already begun their work on the gentrification topic will find that their case work will still apply with the topic change, though the affirmative case would now apply to the negative, and vice-versa. Revising the wording of the Lincoln-Douglas topic is without precedent at the UIL, but maintaining precedent is not as important as doing the right thing for academic debate.

An electronic form is available on the UIL Debate webpage throughout the year for UIL coaches and students to submit topic ideas for consideration.  In addition, coaches are informed of the opportunity to submit topics at Student Activity Conferences, Capital Conference, State Meet coach conferences and other UIL forums.
