Busy Time of Year at the UIL

By Stephanie Ramirez, Communications Officer | Monday, March 14, 2011 3:38 PM

From state championship events, to meetings, to keeping up with business as usual, it has been a busy time of year around the UIL office. Since the weekend of the Swimming & Diving State Meet on March 18 and 19, there has been a UIL State event every weekend.

Swimming & Diving was followed up by the Wrestling State Tournament, the Girls' Basketball State Tournament, the Boys' Basketball State Tournament, and this week was kicked off with the CX Debate State Tournament. These state events are part of what the UIL is all about. These experiences help mold student participants into the leaders and citizens they will become. Congratulations to all UIL State Championship participants and champions! To see a full list of state championship results, please visit the UIL website at www.uiltexas.org.

In other news, the UIL Finance Committee, a standing committee of the UIL Legislative Council, met on March 9 in Austin to discuss the UIL budget. As a result of that meeting, UIL membership fees and ticket prices for 2011-12 will not increase, based on the recommendation of UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt.

By Stephanie Ramirez, Communications Officer | Wednesday, February 16, 2011 3:29 PM

The UIL held its annual Black History Month recognition program Feb. 15. The UIL staff and invited guests were treated to a variety of performances in honor of Black History Month.

Some of the performances included a skit by three second grade students from The University of Texas Elementary School; oral readings by fourth grade students from The University of Texas Elementary School; a solo vocal performance by a Liberal Arts Science Academy (Austin) choir member; and a poetry reading by a student from The University of Texas at Austin who is a former UIL State champion.

Dr. Leonard Moore of The University of Texas at Austin history department was the featured guest speaker and spoke about the importance of making education a priority, specifically for black student-athletes. Dr. Moore stressed the significance of applauding academic success as much as athletic success among black students.

A video of the event will be posted by Feb. 22.

Topics discussed during the meeting included the adverse weather conditions in the last few weeks across the state and how it has affected events ranging from CX debate to the swimming & diving regional meets. Dr. Breithaupt also talked about state budget cuts and the UIL’s commitment to keep costs down for our members schools.

UIL Names New Interim Athletic Director

By Stephanie Ramirez, Communications Officer | Wednesday, January 19, 2011 2:28 PM

Cliff Odenwald has resigned as UIL athletic director to pursue other opportunities and return to the Texas public school system. Before coming to the UIL, Cliff was the athletic director for Plano ISD. Under Cliff’s direction, the UIL athletic department accomplished many great things, including the 2010 reclassification and realignment. While we are sad to see Cliff go, we wish him the best and thank him for all his hard work while at the UIL.

Dr. Mark Cousins, UIL Director of Policy, has been named the Interim Athletic Director. Mark is an expert on the UIL Constitution & Contest Rules and has 16 years of experience with the UIL athletic department. Before becoming Director of Policy, Mark was one of our assistant athletic directors, making him a perfect choice to fill in until a new athletic director is hired later in the spring.

We wish Cliff all the best in his future endeavors, and congratulate Mark on his expanded role at the UIL.
