UIL Academic Meet Kicks Off
By Stephanie Ramirez, Communications Officer | Friday, May 06, 2011 8:54 AM
The 2011 UIL Academic State Meet has officially started. More than 2,700 students will compete in 24 events throughout the weekend. Unlike any of the UIL Athletic State Championship events, all of the Academic State events take place at one time.
After each event is graded, results go through a verification process. Once the results are announced at the Meet, they become the official results. Official results will be posted online throughout the UIL Academic State Meet on the UIL website at http://utdirect.utexas.edu/uil/mlc3_state_results.WBX?s_nxt_year=2011.
Sight Reading Contest Committed to Consistency
By Richard Floyd, Music Director | Tuesday, May 03, 2011 11:03 AM
The following article appeared in The Leaguer in April of 2004. Based on recent occurrences relating to band sight-reading music, it would seem timely to run it once again. Please read on.
There are two things that I know will happen every spring. The first is the need to file my income tax return by April 15. That one is between Uncle Sam and me. The other is the inevitable, passionate discussion of sight-reading music that surfaces every year about this time. That one concerns all of us and I assure you that it is not an issue that I take lightly.
When I came to the UIL in 1984, my predecessor gave me a great deal of sage advice. As years have passed and times have changed, some of his council has lost relevance, but his assessment of the sight-reading contest continues to be remarkably accurate. Dr. Patrick assured me that regardless of the source of the music, the method used to select it or the system used to judge it, there would always be a portion of our directors who would be displeased. He was so right.

Almost 102,000 students competed at the district level in March to have the opportunity to become one of the approximately 2,700 participants who make it to the Academic State Meet.
“The Academic State Meet is always wonderful because kids are always excited and committed,” Academic Director Treva Dayton said. “We get to see the best of the best at their best.”
The 2011 Academic State Meet will be held May 5-7 at the University of Texas at Austin.
Cliff McCurdy, the UIL coordinator at Argyle High School, which has won the 3A Academic State Championship numerous times, said that the competition to get to the state level is always tough.

While soccer has not been around as long as some of the other UIL athletic activities, it has seen its fair share of changes over the last several years. Since its inception as a UIL-sanctioned sport in 1983, soccer has consistently increased in both school and student participation, changed its classification process and seen five different State Tournament locations.
Over the last 20 years, soccer has more than doubled in the number of schools participating in both boys’ and girls’ soccer. The number of student participants in soccer has increased by more than 200% since the 1991 season.
There are several possible reasons for the significant increase in these statistics, according to UIL Assistant Athletic Director and Soccer Tournament Director Peter Contreras.
