Kate Hector joined the UIL media department in September as the new media coordinator for the League. She will play an integral communications role with the UIL writing press releases, attending official meetings and facilitating media at state championship events.

“I am really excited to work with high school athletes and competitors and also be a part of an organization that serves so many high school students who are just figuring out what they want to do, and what they like and what they are good at,” Hector said.

Though she is not a native Texan, Hector has lived in the Lone Star State since 2006 when her family moved to Killeen from Lawton, Oklahoma. Upon enrolling at Killeen Harker Heights High School, she joined the UIL informative speaking team and experienced first-hand the positive effects UIL events can have on student participants.

“My dad was in the Army so I moved to Texas my junior year in high school and went to Harker Heights, which I think was my ninth or tenth school,” Hector said. “I was able to get involved in some UIL events right away, which kind of helped with the transition right in the middle of high school.”

Upon gradation from Harker Heights, she enrolled at Texas Tech University where she would later earn her Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations. While at Texas Tech, she worked as a communications intern for the university athletic department where she worked a variety of events including the 2011 and 2012 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championships.

While at the university, she also worked as the editor-in-chief of the Mass Communicator, an alumni magazine for the College of Media and Communication at Texas Tech.

“It was really cool to work on every aspect of a magazine and hold it in your hands and see the physical representation of all that work,” Hector said. “That was probably a big proud moment for me because I was really proud of all the work we did on the magazine.”

Now a resident Austinite, Hector enjoys exploring her new city with her husband Dunte and daughter Victoria.
