Amendment to policy regarding broadcasting and telecasting UIL events.
The University Interscholastic League Legislative Council recently passed an amendment to the UIL Constitution and Contest Rules that alters the policy regarding broadcasting and telecasting UIL events.
This amendment clarifies that the UIL maintains telecast rights to all post-season UIL events and provides flexibility for broadcasting and telecasting events in larger venues which are very difficult to sell-out 48 hours in advance.
The amendment states the change is effective immediately, pending approval by the Commissioner of Education. This amendment will not impact the 2012 football playoff season. It does not grant rights to broadcasters that do not have a contract with the UIL.
For the upcoming football playoffs, the current rules are still in effect. These rules state:
- A football contest that takes place on any day during the playoffs may only be telecast live if permission from both schools involved in the contest is obtained and the contests is a true sell-out 48 hours prior to the start of the contest.
- A tape-delayed telecast of a football contest during the playoffs may occur as the UIL broadcasting agreement allows. The earliest a tape-delay telecast during the playoffs may begin is one hour after the completion of the football contest.
- Permission must be granted from both schools for a tape-delayed telecast.
For more information about the current rules regarding football telecasts please visit Football Telecast Frequently Asked Questions. There will be no change to telecast policies for the 2012 football playoffs.
