Bio

Putting on plays has always been part of my life. My teachers fostered this interest and I’m still putting on plays today. Growing up outside Kalamazoo, Michigan, I was in every school play possible. A local college provided grown-up theater experiences, including creative dramatics, summer stock, and my initial degree. Pursuit of an MFA in directing brought me to Texas, where I studied with Fran Hodge, Paul Reinhardt, David Nancarrow, Powell Shepard and John Rothegeb. My first employment was with KLRN as a creative supervisor. Zachary Scott Theatre Center then hired me, where my responsibilities included starting an education program; creating, funding, and implementing Project Interact; and directing youth-oriented productions. Teaching experience includes classes in Acting at ACC, SLCC, and as a volunteer in public schools. In Utah I enjoyed serving on the board of the Utah Theatre Association, which was a consortium of public, private, and higher education theatre professionals dedicated to providing theatre education, financial support, and production experience to high school and college students. Other professional pursuits include owning a video production company; working in corporate media; working as director of entertainment for commercial fairs; performing as talent in theatres, commercials and films; and producing media events.

Now I am retired - working in the community theatre - on the board, directing and acting. Nothing prepares you for life like theatre.

My love of OAP began in 1964 as a freshman actress in my first OAP contest. I recently retired after 41 years of teaching Theatre and Speech. I want to continue to contribute to the incredible theatre experience OAP offers students and directors. I graduated with a Speech and Drama degree from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (1972) and I have a M.A. in Theatre Arts from University of Texas at El Paso (1976). In 1973 I took my first OAP to area, I have taken plays to regional’s in Corpus Christi and Lubbock. In my 41 years I have taught theatre and directed productions in the elementary, middle school, high school and college levels with most of my time in high school. I have directed in both public and private school, as well as directing in community theatre and in church settings. I think that OAP is a very important experience in a theatre student’s development of all their theatre skills, with many life lessons included in the experience. I would love to be a part of this experience.

Bio

I am a graduate of North Texas State University with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. I have directed musicals and plays for the public education system, community theater and community benefits for thirty-six years. I was the theater director for Mason High School’s One Act Play Company for three years – with two 1A State Meet appearances: 2010 (2nd runner-up play) and 2013 (1st runner-up play). Prior to directing at the high school level, I directed Mason Junior High’s One Act for two years with two successful-winning plays. Through my involvement with the one act competition – as an audience member, a parent and as a director – I have learned that UIL One Act is much more than producing a play: It is life changing for all those who take the journey.

Participated in OAP in High School were my fondest memories. Watching my daughter compete for four years and going to 5A State three of those years was awesome. I belive one-act play is a fascinating learning experience. I taught drama for 13 years in Plano ISD. Currently in 11th year at POPCS. I have directed over 100 productions and performed in another 100. Creating believable characters is what it is all about. I have directed actors from pre-school through adults. Commissioned playwright and director/founder of the North Texas Arts Project which teaches workshops and performs for schools in Texas.

I have been involved in the One Act Play contest as a student, contest manager, and co-director. Before becoming an instructor/department head and NISOD award winner at Wharton County Junior College I was director of debate and the assistant UIL academic coordinator for several years. I also worked as an assistant director and technical director for a number of large musical productions. As the co-director of UIL One Act play for five years every show advanced to the area contest, 2 of which advanced to the region contest. I believe that UIL One Act Play is the greatest high school competitive event because it provides a unique opportunity for students to work as a company to create a theatrical experience in a competitive arena.

I started out as a high school English teacher who was asked to direct the OAP. I had very limited experience with theatre, but I was blessed enough to be mentored by the best. Most of my theatre training came from TETA, Rick Garcia and a multitude of talented directors who were gracious enough to share their expertise with me and I was able to advance to both region and state. Because of my background, I am very aware of the process involved in learning both with directors and sudents.I believe that competition is a perfect opportunity to encourage as well as educate.

I have been a part of the OAP contest since 1979. My love of theatre springs largely from the contest. After participation in my first contest, then spending part of a summer at UT Summer workshop in 1980, there was no other choice for me than educational theatre. My love for the craft and sharing it with teenagers has been the central driving force for choices I have made from the classroom to becoming a Director of Fine Arts for Waco ISD.
