Judging qualifications:
About Me: My name is Josh Bawelkiewicz. This is my first year as the debate coach at Community High School. My contact information is: joshua.bawelkiewicz@communityisd.org CX Debate - I am a tabula rasa. I judge off the flow. If you win it, you win it. I don’t care what I personally think about the topic.You can run whatever argument you want but know what you’re running and be able to explain it. If you can’t explain your own argument, that’s a problem. Stock Issues - I like a clean round with actual clash. Quality evidence is better than just reading a ton of cards. I care more about whether you explain your arguments and build a clear story than how many pieces of evidence you read. Theory - I will vote on theory if it has standards and voters but the Theory you are running has to be obvious. If you go for everything AND theory in the end with no strategy attached to it expect it to be voted down. Topicality - T's are a important part of debate and I will vote on them if they are ran correctly. The T should have a Definition, Violation, Standards and Voters and the Impact. Counterplan - I like Counter plans, but i prefer Specific Counter plan better than a generic one. Generic DAs are fine if they actually make sense and link to the AFF. Don’t read nuclear war against something that clearly doesn’t connect. The more specific, the better. Impact calc matters. Nuclear war isn’t a strong arg against other cases but, If you go for it, carry it through the whole debate and weigh it. Disadvantages - I like Disadvantages, I believe that it should be ran against every AFF because Disadvantages happen with every plan. I am okay with voting for a generic disadvantage but it has to make sense and has to link. If you are running a Nuclear War disadvantage against a completely different AFF then it would not make sense. The more specific the better. But you should weigh your impacts. Nuclear war is not automatic, if you go for it, you need to carry it through the debate and weigh it. Give me a good story. If you run PTX DA make sure that the arguments are recent and not years old. K - I’ll evaluate the K like anything else, explain the Framework, Link, Alt, Impact. I haven’t seen a ton of K AFFs, so slow down and explain it well. If I understand it and you win it, I’ll vote for it. ALL -Have a good time and have fun!! Speaker points go down for being rude, sexist, racist and disrespectful in round. Speaks go up for clarity, strategy, weighing, and organization. Speaking Events -- Extemp - I expect a speech that goes at least around 4 minutes. Anything much shorter usually means the analysis is missing. I like speeches that tell a clear story, regardless of the topic. Your points should connect and make sense together instead of just sounding like three random headlines. A good speech should have a strong AGD, a roadmap, 3 points with explanation and analysis and a conclusion that ties to the AGD. Sources are important. Use reliable sources like AP News, Reuters, Politico, BBC, The Economist, etc. Avoid weak sources like China Daily or Daily Mail. At the end of the day, have fun and try your best!
