UIL Speech Judges

Judging qualifications:
I have coached UIL CX Debate for five years and have served as a UIL judge for six years. My experience as both a coach and judge has given me a strong understanding of competitive speaking and debate. My judging philosophy is fairly simple: be clear, be prepared, and give me a reason to vote for you. I value strong arguments, organization, solid evidence, and effective communication. Do not speak so quickly that clarity is lost. I need to be able to understand and follow your arguments. I also expect clash. Debate should be a direct engagement with the other side’s arguments, not two teams giving prepared speeches without responding to one another. Listen to what your opponents say, address their arguments, and explain why your position should win. I judge the round that happens in front of me, not the round I think should have happened. I try to remain objective and base my decision on the arguments presented in the round. Most importantly, I want students to leave understanding why I made my decision and what they can do to improve.
