Judging qualifications:
I’m looking for clear, confident, and engaging speeches. I value strong organization, vocal variety, and purposeful movement. Your speech should feel polished and intentional — not rushed or memorized without emotion. Hi everyone! I've competed in both speech and debate during high school and on the collegiate circuit. So from 2011- 2017 I competed and from 2021 - present I've been judging high school tournaments (with the exception of the past two years when I lived abroad). Clarity is very important to me. I should be able to easily understand your main message, structure, and key takeaways. Strong introductions and conclusions matter, and I appreciate clear transitions between points. For interpretation events, I look for characterization, emotional range, and meaningful blocking choices. Make sure your performance choices connect back to the theme or message of the piece.

Judging Philosophy

CX

Rounds judged: 2
Judging approach: Policy Maker
Policy priority: Resolution of substantive issues is more important than communication skills
Evidence philosophy: Quality of evidence is more important than quantity of evidence
Paradigm: I’m a flow judge, but I strongly preferclear, conversational speed — please don’t spread. If I can’t understand it, I can’t flow it.

LD

Rounds judged: 30
Approach: Resolution of substantive issues is more important than communication skills
Philosophy:
I’m a flow judge, but I strongly preferclear, conversational speed — please don’t spread. If I can’t understand it, I can’t flow it. In LD, I prioritize framework and moral reasoning. I’m looking for a clear explanation of why something is moral or immoral, not just claims or impacts.
