Judging qualifications:
As a former UIL speaking events competitor and current speech coach, I approach judging with an understanding of both the performance and preparation that students bring to the round. I evaluate entries based on UIL standards, focusing on effective communication, preparation, and purposeful choices rather than personal preference. I value strong fundamentals, thoughtful interpretation, and authentic audience connection, and I am open to varied styles as long as they serve the material and follow UIL rules. My goal is to provide fair rankings and constructive, respectful feedback that supports student growth and reflects the educational purpose of UIL competition.

Judging Philosophy

CX

Rounds judged: 0
Judging approach: Policy Maker
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quantity of evidence and quality of evidence are of equal importance
Paradigm: I am a flow-oriented judge who evaluates the debate based on the arguments presented in the round. Debaters should clearly explain their claims, warrants, and impacts, and weigh arguments for me in the final rebuttals. I value organization, clarity, and teamwork over speed for speed’s sake, and I will not vote on arguments I cannot understand. Evidence should be clearly cited and explained, and clash is essential. I am open to traditional policy arguments, including cases, disadvantages, counterplans, and kritiks, as long as they are clearly explained and tied to the ballot. Cross-examination should be professional and used to advance the debate. Speaker points reflect clarity, strategy, and professionalism.

LD

Rounds judged: 0
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
I evaluate Lincoln-Douglas debate based on the arguments presented in the round, giving primary weight to clear analysis, logical reasoning, and effective clash. Debaters should clearly explain their value, criterion, and how their arguments meet that framework. I prefer quality explanation and weighing over speed, and I will not evaluate arguments I cannot understand. Evidence should be clearly cited and explained, and extensions must be clear in later speeches. I am open to a variety of argument styles as long as they are well-explained and tied back to the framework. Speaker points reflect clarity, organization, and professionalism.
