Judging qualifications:
Qualifications: I have served in ministry and public preaching for over 25 years. During that time, I have consistently engaged in extemporaneous speaking before live audiences multiple times each week. This has required me to research a wide range of subjects, organize thoughts quickly, adapt messages to specific audiences, and communicate clearly and persuasively. In addition, I have experience training others in public speaking and communication, with an emphasis on clarity, structure, and audience connection. This background has given me a practical and professional foundation for evaluating speakers in Extemporaneous Speaking. Philosophy: When judging Extemp, I look for a speaker who demonstrates three key qualities: Content and Organization – Clear thesis, logical structure, and well-supported arguments. I value evidence that is accurate and relevant, but also presented in a way that helps the audience understand the "big picture." Delivery and Communication – Confident, natural, and conversational speaking that maintains eye contact, engages the audience, and avoids unnecessary filler. A polished delivery should enhance the message, not distract from it. Analysis and Application – Beyond reciting facts, I want to see the speaker explain why it matters and apply their ideas to real-world contexts. The best Extemp speeches show insight and offer a reasoned perspective. I do not judge based on whether I personally agree with a speaker’s conclusions. My role is to evaluate how effectively they constructed, supported, and delivered their case. I appreciate speakers who show poise under pressure, originality of thought, and the ability to connect with their audience.
