In high school, I competed in both LD debate and Extemp speaking. I qualified for Area multiple years in both events. My senior year, I was a state alternate in LD debate and a state competitor in Extemp (persuasive). I have judged off and on in the past few years at various schools at the invitational and district levels.

Rounds judged: 2
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
Value/criterion debate is important to me in a round, but I want to hear your contentions; explain how they strengthen your case. If you're going to make me flow definitions for the resolution, then use them. Bring drops across the flow, and give me voters at the end. I don't mind spreading, as long as you're clear. If I can't understand you, I'm going to stop flowing. (I will not vote down for spreading, but I use my flow strongly when weighing a final decision in the round.) The more clash, the better! I don't mind basic technical jargon, but since I haven't competed in over a decade, any "newer" jargon may throw me off.
