Judging qualifications:
I was a professional actress, voice artist, musician in my early twenties. I then moved on to local, domestic and global ministries and non-profit work. In my 40's and 50's I worked in global communications, and transformational technology. I have served on the board of several non-profit organizations and taught local and national webinars focusing on the latest neuroscience, technology and therapies for cognitive stimulation, pain reduction and life enhancement. Effective communication skills are the one constant in my life. I know first hand that communicating the difference you want to make in the world brings you the teams, resources and finances to make the world a better place for everyone, and gives one's life profound meaning and enrichment. That is what I want to instill in each student.

Judging Philosophy

CX

Rounds judged: 6
Judging approach: Stock Issues
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quality of evidence is more important than quantity of evidence
Paradigm: At heart, I am a stock issues judge. Quality of evidence and a good persuasive speaking style is what will serve the student best in life. Having said that, I will give feedback on any style, including progressive K's and the like, in a manner to help the student take all their speaking skills to the next level. I believe that powerful communication skills will equip the students to be effective leaders in every area of life. My feedback is always in service to students. I will let them know what was great and what could use polishing.

LD

Rounds judged: 30
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
At heart, I believe that each category of debate has its own virtue and builds different muscles for the student. LD is classically a framework and value driven category. Focusing on structure and the "Why" behind the case is paramount. Quality of evidence and a good persuasive speaking style is what will serve the student best in life. I believe that treating LD as a mini CX round is not taking full advantage of the skills available by staying true to form. Having said that, I will give feedback on any style in a manner to help the student take all their speaking skills to the next level. I believe that powerful communication skills will equip the students to be effective leaders in any area of life that matters to them. My feedback is always in service of the student. I will let them know what was great and what could use polishing.
