Judging qualifications:
I fully retired from teaching in 2021 after 42 years total of being a full time teacher in English Language Arts, including AP and Honors courses, and theatre arts. During those years, I coached all of the speaking events at one point or another and had regional and state qualifiers in prose, poetry, and CX debate. I also directed one-act play for 38 years, with area and regional advancement and one state trip. I am passionate about UIL and am currently helping direct various 2A and 3A districts in my area. I have judged all of the speaking events at district level, some at regional, and CX at state. I feel most qualified for the interpretation and extemporaneous events since I have worked with them most. I love students and want to see them succeed in their presentations, learning more each time they perform or speak.

Judging Philosophy

CX

Rounds judged: 0
Judging approach: Tabula Rasa
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quantity of evidence and quality of evidence are of equal importance
Paradigm: I utilize the stock issues as a foundation for the debate, but I also consider the best presentation of the material and how it is analyzed and presented during the round. I want to see how each team truly listens and argues what is being presented during the actual round--a clash should be indicated, not just separate arguments going on. Quantity of evidence used for support should be substantial but understanding of the material and making sure its quality is there to support the argument are equally important to me. Communication is very important! An argument cannot be won if the judge cannot understand or hear what is said.

Philosophy:
Again, values used and how linked to the topic is key. Communicating understanding of material presented and truly clashing with the opponent and showing a stronger, better case is the key.
