Participated in college: No

Judging qualifications:
While not having participated in Speech and Debate in high school or college, I believe I am qualified to judge the above events due not only to the prior coaching experience, but also the acquisition of a masters degree in political science, with a specialization in American Government, and teaching American Government at a dual credit and college level.

Judging Philosophy

CX

Rounds judged: 6
Judging approach: Tabula Rasa
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quantity of evidence and quality of evidence are of equal importance
Paradigm: I take more of a holistic approach to judging rounds of CX. I see valid points in both Stock Issues and Policymaker paradigms, but take it more on a case by case basis, thus Tabula Rasa. I dislike the weaponization of rules as a means of winning a round due to it not debating the actual topic. I believe that teams are expected to be professional at all times, and this includes in their manners and courtesy. Finally, I believe that claims by either side are fair game, and if left unresolved will defer to which side best explained/refuted their stance.

LD

Rounds judged: 5
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
I take much the same approach as when judging CX. I judge LD based on various aspects such as strength of argument, attention to detail, professionalism, and communication skills. Like CX, I dislike when contestants weaponize rulesets in order to score points as it detracts from the stated debate topic/question.
