Judging qualifications:
I have coached and judged extemp, LD Debate, and CX Debate for 9 years. My students regularly place at District and many advance to Regionals. Occassionally, I have had students advance to State (Extemp - 2, LD - 2, and CX - 6). I generally consider myself a tab judge. I generally prefer more traditional debate but will listen to more progressive styles. I have no pre-set opinions. I have one serious issue - I believe speaking events should consist of speaking rather than simply flashing each other evidence. I'm competent.

Judging Philosophy

CX

Rounds judged: 14
Judging approach: Tabula Rasa
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quality of evidence is more important than quantity of evidence
Paradigm: Tell me what I should vote on. Resolve the issues. I like to understand what you are saying. I need Kritiks to have clear alts. I really look for quality links on DA's. I believe most things are topical - within reason. I prefer for cases to be argues rather than simply generic attacks but recognize that isn't going to happen a great deal. Oddly enough, I believe inherency can win - but seldom see it. I prefer clear solvency but clearly recognize that the negative has to have some offense to overcome even a very limited solvency. I like stock issues - but clearly recognize most debates will not be resolved around them.

LD

Rounds judged: 8
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
Clear value and criterion links. I really dislike policy style argumentation in LD - counter-plans, advantages, disadvantages, etc. I'll listen - I just don't like it - which means it is easier for the other team to beat you. But they do have to beat you.
