I also competed in extemporaneous speaking and prose while in high school and made it to regional finals in informative speaking. Judging Philosophy

CX

Rounds judged: 1
Judging approach: Tabula Rasa
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quality of evidence is more important than quantity of evidence
Paradigm: I am a tabula rasa judge, so I will listen to anything that a debater presents. I value traditional debate arguments (stock issues & DA's) higher than kritiks; however, if a kritik is structured and ran correctly, I will consider it. Speed kills in UIL and debaters should first and foremost be concerned with whether or not they are communicating effectively to the entire room.

LD

Rounds judged: 0
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
LD debaters should continually clarify the criterions and values in the round and make sure that they are weighing their opponent's against their own. The best LD rounds are the ones that are clearly mapped out and analyzed thoroughly. LD debaters should be able to explain the philosophy behind their reasoning and support their arguments with cards.
