Mellessa Denny

Current high school:
Amarillo

Currently coaching?: Yes

Conference: 5A

Number of years coached: 22

Number of tournaments judged: 3

High school attended:
Borger HS

Graduated high school: 1993

Participated in high school: Yes

Participated in college: No

Judging qualifications:
In debate, I am a traditional coach but will vote on progressive arguments IF they are well-developed and the analysis is there. I do not like game-playing in debate really. For interp, I want to see the student connect to the literature and not just rely on flashy things to win. In extemp, I want to see sources but I also want to see some analysis as well.

Judging Philosophy

CX

Rounds judged: 3
Judging approach: Policy Maker
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quality of evidence is more important than quantity of evidence
Paradigm: I will vote on any arguments that are presented but I am not a fan of game playing and abuse arguments. I want to see clash and I want to see advocacy. I am more traditional but will vote on progressive arguments also. I want to hear analysis and not just reading of a card.

LD

Rounds judged: 1
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
I want to see value clash as well as a mix of philosophy/theory and pragmatic applications. I want LD to be LD and not one-person CX.
