Number of years coached: 18

Number of tournaments judged: 5

High school attended:
Banquete

Graduated high school: 1975

Participated in high school: No

Participated in college: No

Judging qualifications:
I took several speech and theatre classes in college, am certified in Speech and Theatre Arts, have taught 20+ years, have coached speaking events in high school (12+ years) and middle school (8+ years), and have had students make it to State in CX, LD, Congress, Informative and Persuasive Speaking and to Regional in Poetry/Prose and OAP. I enjoy coaching and encouraging students--and have the highest admiration for those who dare to accept the challenge of speech and debate. It's so fun to be "wowed" by what a young person can do in presentation/performance!

Judging Philosophy

CX

Rounds judged: 10
Judging approach: Stock Issues
Policy priority: Resolution of substantive issues is more important than communication skills
Evidence philosophy: Quality of evidence is more important than quantity of evidence
Paradigm: Stock issues are important. Speakers should do their best to be understood and to clarify the key issues in the round. I like to see clash with persuasive speakers having effective speaking styles backed by good organization and relevant evidence. Critical listening skills and keeping up with the flow are advantageous to point out key voters in rebuttals. The speakers should be able to tell me which voting issues they think are the most important in the round and why.

LD

Rounds judged: 2
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
To me, LD has a lot to do with the art of persuasion--and being passionate about why your value, criterion, and contentions are the best in the round and why your opponent's are not. Critical listening skills, being informed on the topic, and keeping up with the flow are advantageous for effective clash in the round. Enjoy it!
