Judging Philosophy

Rounds judged: 30
Judging approach: Tabula Rasa
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quality of evidence is more important than quantity of evidence
Paradigm: I am a tabula rasa judge, so I come in with an open mind to all arguments. However, I prefer the traditional style of debate and I strictly follow the UIL rules and guidelines. When the round becomes difficult to frame, or neither team shows a clear warrant for the win, I default to stock issues.

Rounds judged: 5
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
I like a clear explanation of criterion and value. I prefer that the debaters make this evident in the first speech, rather than waiting on the opponent to decipher it for the round. The criterion and value should have clear links to the real world and have appropriate evidence to support each.
