This is a fluid situation and additional information will come should further changes take place.  Please contact your DEC first if you have specific scheduling questions.  The UIL athletic staff will also be readily available for contact at anytime.

Updated 04-02-2020

Remote Learning/Coaching:

During statewide school suspension, remote learning/coaching of UIL activities is allowed through electronic, video or teleconferencing type methods. Schools shall limit instruction for UIL activities to a maximum of eight hours per week per activity, in addition to a maximum of sixty minutes per day Monday through Friday.

For athletic activities that are out of season, schools shall limit remote instruction to a maximum of sixty minutes per day Monday through Friday.

UIL Press Release for 4/3/2020:

In accordance with the Executive Order issued by Governor Greg Abbott mandating schools remain temporarily closed through Monday, May 4, 2020 due to COVID-19 (Coronavirus), the University Interscholastic League (UIL) is further modifying contingency plans and extending its previously announced timeline for completing UIL activities this academic school year.

These modifications are based on schools resuming operations on Monday, May 4, 2020. As that date approaches, UIL will monitor all available information and provide member schools with more specific guidance on district and post-season date adjustments related to this new extension.

All in-person practices, rehearsals and workouts remain suspended until further notice and remote instruction remains in place. UIL remains committed to providing a reasonable acclimatization period for rehearsals and practices to occur prior to resuming contests and games. All decisions remain flexible and will be consistent with the advice of local, state and federal officials.

The UIL will continue to provide timely, ongoing updates and is reassessing this ever-changing situation daily. Please continue to check the UIL website and social media accounts for further updates.

UIL Athletics Email for 4/3/2020:

Athletic Directors and Coaches,

The following information was sent to superintendents as an update to the recent order by Governor Abbott.  As stated below, we will be providing information on district and post-season adjustments related to the May 4th extension, and we ask for your patience in receiving that communication.  We are hopeful, as you all are, that we can get back to completing each respective sport season and will provide specific guidance and information on how that will look upon return.  As a reminder, due to reduced calendar dates, there will be modifications in qualifying structures and timelines for district and post season events.

We are both amazed and appreciative of the leadership of our athletic directors and coaches.  We are inspired by the work that continues in a challenging environment and the creativity of the remote coaching that directly benefits the athletes across the state. Stay strong, stay dedicated, and continue your intentional leadership.  Our athletic staff is here to serve you, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to call or email (athletics@uiltexas.org).

Stay safe,

Susan Elza

Superintendents,

We continue to be amazed at the great work by public schools across Texas during this crisis. Thanks to each of you for your leadership and vision for serving students in innovative and creative ways.

With the recent order by Governor Abbott closing schools across the state until May 4th, UIL has worked to further modify contingency plans for completing UIL activities this academic year. These modifications are based on schools resuming operations on May 4th and as that date approaches, UIL will monitor all of the available information and communicate any needed adjustments.

We are still committed to providing a reasonable acclimatization period for rehearsals and practices to occur, consistent with guidance from local, state, and federal officials, prior to students returning to competition. This acclimatization period may include the opportunity to compete in tournaments, meets and invitational competitions. We will provide more guidance and specificity on this in the coming weeks to allow time for you to plan and prepare. This includes providing more specific guidance on district and post-season date adjustments related to this new extension. Please do not begin to make plans for district competition prior to receiving this additional information. Again, once we have more information approaching May 4th, we will provide those details to you for planning purposes.

Practices, rehearsals, and workouts remain suspended until further notice. The previously communicated information allowing remote instruction remains in place.

Again, this is based on the information available at this time. Should further changes be required, we will communicate them to you as quickly as we can.

Please know we welcome your input, concerns, and questions.

Again, thank you for your leadership and for your patience. We are in this together!

Sincerely,

Jamey Harrison, EdD
UIL Deputy Director
