Judging qualifications:
I competed heavily in speech and debate whilst in high school and continue to do so in my collegiate career. In high school, I attended Lindale HS (5A) and currently debate for Texas Tech. I teach at speech and debate camps during the summers, as well as judge and coach frequently on each level of competition (UIL, TFA, "National circuit"), making sure I stay active in the community. I also do compete in parli debate in college, which has kept me active in the activity as well. Policy - I competed in policy primarily while in high school. I attended the UIL and TFA state tournaments both twice. My junior year of high school, I went 3-1 at UIL state and 3-3 at TFA state. My senior year I was a semifinalist at UIL state, and made it to double octo-finals at TFA state. Congress - I competed in congressional debate while in high school, making it to congressional state for UIL my junior and senior year. My junior year, due to illness, I didn't make it out of prelims. However, my senior year I was a finalist at state. LD - While I have no experience in debating LD, I do have experience both teaching LD and judging LD. Speech events - While in high school, I competed in all of the speaking events. My junior year, I was a regional qualifier for prose and a regional finalist in persuasive speaking. My senior year, I was a regional qualifier in poetry, and ended up getting second at UIL state (5A) in informative speaking.

Judging Philosophy

CX

Rounds judged: 25
Judging approach: Tabula Rasa
Policy priority: Resolution of substantive issues is more important than communication skills
Evidence philosophy: Quantity of evidence and quality of evidence are of equal importance
Paradigm: I do not like the term "tab judge" because I feel like no judge is truly "tab", but I do feel that it does best fit me into a one phrase definition. My primary focus is the flow, and will vote for the team that wins the flow and has the easiest route to the ballot to ensure that I do as little intervening as possible to justify the decision. Because of that, I do not have really any particular preferences in styles of debate or argumentation in debate. This activity is no longer my activity to do at a high school level, so I encourage debaters to debate the way they want to debate and have me adapt around them. For a longer, more in-depth paradigm you can view it here: https://www.tabroom.com/index/paradigm.mhtml?search_first=&search_last=Gustafson
