Judging qualifications:
I coached oral interpretation for 16 years and debate for 10. I have had a handful of state qualifiers in oral interp (2 medalists) and numerous competitors at 4A state CX. I have judged at several regional competitions as well as districts and invitationals since leaving coaching. Most importantly, I love listening to intelligent kids flex their brains around a new topic each year in debate as well as interpers creating meaningful performances.

Judging Philosophy

Rounds judged: 3
Judging approach: Policy Maker
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quantity of evidence and quality of evidence are of equal importance
Paradigm: I am a policy maker that likes to hear stock issues. Quality evidence is only such if understood and used to the fullest. I applaud quantity when it is ALL used in a well constructed argument. I am not a fan of kritiks as I would rather hear a debate over the topic. I enjoy creative cases that have unique ways of solving the problem. Bring that counterplan on, but don't contradict yourself later.

Rounds judged: 0
Approach: Communication skills are more important than resolution of substantive issues
Tell me a story, give me an analogy, weave me your compelling arguments. You have evidence, bring it on. It's from the 1800s, no problem. However, I want to hear a value AND criteron. Don't ask for my ballot without them. I will love to have you explain to me why a certain philosophy pertains to the topic AND me. Make me care and you can win my ballot.
