Judging qualifications:
I believe debate is still a speaking event and thus every word is still critical to the overall experience. I like to see clash in debate. Respect is very important. Comprehension and analysis are equally important. Students need to understand both the content and implications of cases. This is my 37th year to teach and judge for state, CX, other district tournaments and invitationals.

Judging Philosophy

CX

Rounds judged: 2
Judging approach: Tabula Rasa
Policy priority:
Evidence philosophy: Quality of evidence is more important than quantity of evidence
Paradigm: I hate spreading. I believe evidence and performance are equally important. I think students need to understand what the consequences and causes of actions are.

LD

Rounds judged: 10
Approach: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Philosophy:
I love the speaking aspect of debate and the invaluable element of thinking and making decisions quickly and critically. The skills they learn are vital to success in the future. Even if they never choose to compete after high school, effective debaters make better informed and productive citizens.
