Judging qualifications:
I was a CX debater in high school (President of Debate club) - advanced to State twice with high speaker points. I also competed in Poetry, Prose, Extemp, One Act. I was a judge for hire through Communication Education Consultants (Dr. Lawrence Smith) for over 10 years. I have judged CX state for multiple years and events at Texas State. I have an MA and BA in Speech Communication and teach college level speech courses. My work has recently been featured in a college level Business and Professional Communication text. I have a passion for speaking events and I am excited to return to judging.

Judging Philosophy

CX

Rounds judged:
Judging approach: Stock Issues
Policy priority: Communication skills and resolution of substantive issues are of equal importance
Evidence philosophy: Quality of evidence is more important than quantity of evidence
Paradigm: I enter every round with an openness to let the ballot speak - I look for which team presented with clarity, demonstrated communication competence(presentation, evidence, analysis). I often decide a round based on pragmatic analysis coupled with acquisition of the stock issues.

LD

Rounds judged:
Approach: Resolution of substantive issues is more important than communication skills
Philosophy:
I would classify myself as having a preference for policy-centric argumentation. I never competed in LD, but have judged for many years. I look for the winner of key arguments in the round i.e. the person who persuaded me in the round.
