Judging qualifications:
I have been involved as a UIL coach my entire 32 years of teaching and this is my first year of retirement. For the past 23 years, I served as UIL Coordinator, One Act Play Director, and through the years coached all speaking events: Prose, Poetry, Informative, Persuasive, LD Debate, and CX Debate. I have had many state qualifiers, as well as a state champion in Poetry. As many of you know who are speech coaches, to enter you students you must either provide a judge or pay the judging fee. My school did not have available funding for judging fees, so I have judged many invitational meets in all of these speaking events. This past year I judged at Ranger, Bangs, Wylie, and Lampasas. I judged District CX at Brownwood and District Prose, Poetry, Informative, Persuasive, and LD at Big Spring. Likewise, I have judged at Regional both at Odessa and Abilene. I have also judged State LD Debate.

Judging Philosophy

CX

Rounds judged: over 10 for the 2011-2012 year
Judging approach: stock issues
Policy priority: Equal
Evidence philosophy: quality
Paradigm: Rate of Delivery: Speed is fine, but if I can't understand you, I can't judge you. Philosophy: I am open to any "well presented" philisophical view. Style: I am traditional UIL with a liberal openness to relevant views that aren't so traditional. Arguments: I am considered a judge with no bias, but even should you hit one of which I am not aware, I am open to good argument. Nail it down with evidence, make sure the link is there, and you have me. Speaker Points: I usually rank from 25-29, but I am not opposed to 30 for someone who impresses me. Likewise, I will go below the 25 if the effort is definitely not there. I appreciate confidence and sarcasm, but not at the sacrifice of your opponent's soul. Remember that debate should be challenging, but fun!

LD

Rounds judged: over 10 for the 2011-2012 year
Approach: Equal
Philosophy:
Organization is important with a solid value and criteria. Can you convince me that yours is stronger than your opponents? Rate of Delivery: Speed is fine, but I can not judge a debate that I can not clearly hear.
