i was a 4 year competitor in speech/debate in high school from 1983-1987. i was a uil 4a state champion in persuasive and a silver medal winner in ld. i was in the state finals in both events on several occasions. gp was 5a when i was a freshman and i was a regional finalist in both events that year. i also was a tfa state as well as nfl national competitor in ld and extemp. immediately after high school i judged both events at several district/regional and final meets. i haven't judged since 2001 but i am anxious to get back into it.

i believe that polished speech conveying poorly developed and defended arguments is as ineffective as substandard communication skills conveying well-reasoned positions. i genuinely believe that good communication skills and good resolution affirmation/negation are BOTH important to prevailing on my ballot.
