Kevin Jones may be new to the UIL team, but the organization is not new to him. Since he was a young student, the League has been a fundamental part of his life — from student-athlete to principal and now to UIL policy director.

“I am honored by the opportunity to work for such an influential statewide organization,” Jones said. “Like millions of other Texans, UIL has had a lasting impact on my life.”

Last year, the League underwent a Sunset review (as mandated by the Texas Legislature), and one of the recommendations to come from that review was a rewrite of the UIL Constitution and Contest Rules. One of Jones’ assignments is to work on that project.

“I will be working within the policy department to help facilitate the rewriting of the UIL Constitution and Contest rules, which will be an open and transparent process involving many stakeholders and overseen by the Legislative Council,” Jones said. “One of my jobs also is to respond to the public, schools and coaches regarding policy questions.”

Jones who joined the staff at the start of the 2014 school year said he is enjoying his new job.

“I have been impressed with my coworkers,” he said. “They are an intelligent group of individuals who do a great job of keeping the well-being of students as their top priority.”

Jones graduated from Port Neches-Groves High School in Southeast Texas and spent his longest tenure as an educator — teacher, coach and administrator — at a neighboring school, Bridge City ISD. He most recently was the principal at Burnet Middle School in Burnet, Texas.

After evacuating to Central Texas from the coast for Hurricane Rita and Ike, Jones and his wife “fell in love with the area and decided this was where we wanted to raise our children,” he said.

“We have six adopted children, Kendall, 15, Kaci, 13, Klayton, 11, Karson, 7, Kyler, 6, and Kaleb, 6,” Jones said. “My wife is currently three months pregnant with a baby boy.”
